Money Market: Money Market funds seek a stable $1.00 constant net asset value or (NAV). They target the highest short term return while trying to never lose money.
Very few money markets have ever lost clients money except in the financial crisis of 2008, when two money funds broke below the 1.00 NAV (broke the buck) in the 37 year history of money funds. After these two firms broke the buck, the Government stepped in and for a short time guaranteed or backstopped all money market accounts. There are many types of money markets. Some invest in high yield, some government, and others are State Tax Free or Municipal Money Market Funds.
Money Market Accounts
Banks offer savings and money market deposit accounts, but these shouldn’t be confused with money market mutual funds. The money market accounts often offer higher yields and less requirements than a banking institution offers. Today many higher yielding money market accounts do offer check writing capabilities.
